Anaheim has officially launched a ‘Girls in Government’ program, offering young girls a direct pathway to explore leadership and civic involvement. Last month, the Anaheim City Council voted unanimously to adopt this initiative as a city-sponsored program. The program aims to provide junior high and high school girls with real-time exposure to local government through workshops, mentorship, and professional development.
The inaugural event in 2024 featured approximately 80 students who engaged in panel discussions and attended workshops on business etiquette and financial fitness. According to Voice of OC, Councilwoman Natalie Rubalcava emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “It’s a workforce development making sure that our girls in our neighborhoods are aware of the career opportunities.”
The program is designed specifically for Anaheim residents and is set to hold its next event in Fall 2025. Private sponsorships have played a crucial role in funding the program, raising nearly $10,000 to cover materials, meals, and event logistics. Sponsors include OCVIBE, AltaMed, and SoCalGas.
Councilwoman Norma Campos Kurtz expressed concerns about the program’s impact on existing budgets, but Rubalcava assured that private sponsorships would offset costs. The program aims to inspire young girls to consider careers in public service and government, fostering a new generation of leaders in Anaheim.
