Silverwood, a new development in Hesperia, is being hailed as the kindest neighborhood in America. Located about 80 miles east of Los Angeles in the Inland Empire, Silverwood offers affordable homes, scenic parks, and trails. The community’s unique feature is a “Kindness Pledge,” which residents are encouraged to sign, promoting a culture of kindness and neighborly support.
Brandon Dill and his wife, Cathy Khoonsrivong, were among the first to move into Silverwood as they prepared to become first-time parents. They were intrigued by the Kindness Pledge, which emphasizes creating a community reminiscent of small towns where neighbors care for one another. The pledge aims to foster a supportive environment, potentially leading to healthier, happier residents.
John Ohanian, the project general manager at DMB Development, hopes the pledge will inspire residents to live harmoniously. “A culture of kindness is being designed into the fabric of the community,” he told Silverwood News. Although the pledge is not enforceable, it serves as an aspirational guide for residents.
Silverwood is part of a larger trend of communities focusing on kindness. Dale Atkins, a psychologist, and Dr. Kelli Harding, a psychiatrist, both emphasize the health benefits of living in supportive communities. Research has shown that kindness can lead to reduced stress, improved sleep, and even better immune systems.
The development, which can eventually accommodate up to 15,000 families, is attracting diverse residents, including multigenerational families like Tracy Smith and her daughter Clair Mattig-Smith. They decided to stay in California after visiting Silverwood, drawn by its sense of community and affordable living.
As Silverwood continues to grow, it aims to become a modern-day Roseto, Pennsylvania, a town famous for its health benefits attributed to strong community ties. With plans for more homes, schools, and amenities, Silverwood is setting a new standard for neighborhood living in America.
