Americans Under 30 Have A Distrust Of Institutions, Think US On Wrong Path

A recent Harvard Institute of Politics survey reveals that young Americans, aged 18 to 29, are experiencing significant stress and have little confidence in institutions. The poll, conducted in early November, highlights widespread economic concerns and a general belief that the country is on the wrong track. According to the survey, 57% of young adults believe the U.S. is headed in the wrong direction, with only 32% viewing the country as a healthy or somewhat functioning democracy.

John Della Volpe, Director of Polling at Harvard’s Institute of Politics, emphasized the profound uncertainty young Americans feel, stating, “Their trust in democracy, the economy, and even each other is fraying.” Economic issues are a major concern, with inflation, high costs, and stagnant wages shaping their views. The survey also indicates that 44% of young adults expect AI to take away more opportunities than it creates.

Despite their skepticism, young Americans still prefer Democratic control in the upcoming 2026 elections. However, only about half of them say they will definitely or probably vote next year. The poll also found that young adults are divided on personal financial prospects, with 30% expecting to be better off than their parents, 25% expecting to be worse off, and 26% expecting to be about the same.

The survey results underscore a generational retreat from traditional ideologies, with support for capitalism, socialism, and democratic socialism declining since 2018. As noted in previous findings, young Americans are increasingly disillusioned with the world and struggle to find their place in it. The poll’s margin of error is +/- 2.94% points.
