Americans Oppose Local AI Data Centers

A recent Gallup poll reveals that a significant majority of Americans oppose the construction of data centers for artificial intelligence in their local areas. Conducted between March 2 and 18, the survey found that 70% of respondents are against these projects, with 48% expressing strong opposition. These data centers, which house computing equipment essential for AI technology, have sparked concerns due to their high electricity and water usage, potentially impacting the environment and local utility bills.

The opposition to AI data centers mirrors that of nuclear power plants, although the resistance is stronger for data centers. According to Gallup, 53% of Americans oppose building nuclear plants in their area. Environmental concerns are a major factor, with 46% of people worried about the environmental impact of AI data centers. Issues such as excessive water and energy use, pollution, and potential negative effects on local quality of life are frequently cited.

While some Americans see economic benefits in building data centers, such as job creation and increased tax revenue, these views are less common. Only a quarter of respondents favor data center projects, and just 7% are strongly in favor. The New American Journal reports that Democrats are more likely than Republicans to strongly oppose data centers, with women more likely than men to express strong opposition.

The opposition to data centers poses a challenge for the expansion of AI infrastructure in the U.S. As AOL notes, the “not in my backyard” sentiment is prevalent, potentially leading to grassroots activism and legal challenges. With AI data centers crucial for technological advancements, overcoming public resistance will be essential for future developments.
