An American Airlines flight bound for Boston was forced to abort its takeoff at LAX on Sunday night after a cargo plane entered the runway without authorization. The incident occurred at approximately 10:35 p.m. local time when AeroLogic flight 619, a Boeing 777F, crossed in front of American Airlines flight 2453, an Airbus A321-200, which had been cleared for takeoff by air traffic control.
The American Airlines jet, carrying 94 passengers and seven crew members, was traveling at about 154 mph and was nearly airborne when the air traffic controller instructed the pilots to abort the takeoff. According to the FAA, the two planes came within approximately 5,200 feet of each other. The quick actions of the air traffic controller and the American Airlines pilots prevented a potential disaster.
The American Airlines flight, initially scheduled to depart at 10:15 p.m., returned to the gate and later departed on another aircraft, taking off more than two hours late and arriving in Boston a little before 9 a.m. on Monday. The airline expressed gratitude to its crew and passengers for their understanding.
The AeroLogic flight had arrived from Shanghai and was taxiing to its gate when the runway incursion occurred. The FAA reported that the AeroLogic crew crossed Runway 25R without permission. AeroLogic, a joint venture between DHL and Lufthansa Cargo, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This incident is part of a broader trend of runway incursions, with the FAA noting 101 such events caused by pilot deviations in 2025. The FAA is expected to investigate the incident to determine the exact circumstances and contributing factors.
