On Wednesday (July 10), Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. The New York Democrat alleges that the justices have repeatedly failed to disclose financial and personal entanglements related to consequential matters before the court, constituting a threat to American rule of law and democracy.
“The unchecked corruption crisis on the Supreme Court has now spiraled into a Constitutional crisis threatening American democracy writ large,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement.
The congresswoman argues that the justices’ refusal to recuse themselves from cases involving their benefactors and spouses represents a constitutional crisis. She also alleges that the justices have failed to report millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court, which is against the law.
The impeachment resolutions include specific articles against both Justice Thomas and Justice Alito. Ocasio-Cortez maintains that such conduct warrants impeachment, trial, removal from office, and disqualification from holding future office in the United States.
The move is part of a broader campaign by House Democrats to focus on the Supreme Court in their campaign year messaging. However, the impeachment attempt is expected to fail in the Republican-controlled House.
