Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva officially announced his candidacy for the 2026 sheriff’s race on Tuesday. Villanueva, who served as sheriff from 2018 to 2022, aims to reclaim his position by challenging the current sheriff, Robert Luna, who defeated him in the 2022 election with 59.8% of the vote.
In a video posted on X, Villanueva stated, “Over the last several years, Los Angeles County has seen the consequences of failed leadership, not just in the sheriff’s department, but across our local government.” He criticized the current administration for issues such as workforce reduction, deputy suicides, and in-custody deaths. Villanueva emphasized the need to restore the department’s capacity to combat crime and ensure public safety.
Villanueva’s previous term as sheriff was marked by clashes with the county Board of Supervisors and controversy over his handling of deputy gangs and COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Despite these challenges, Villanueva remains committed to returning to office with “broader experience, more clarity, and a deeper commitment to the people” according to Pasadena Now.
Sheriff Robert Luna, who succeeded Villanueva, has announced his intention to seek re-election, highlighting reduced crime rates and increased transparency as key achievements during his tenure. Luna stated, “Our service must always be effective, respectful, empathetic, and constitutional” as reported by FOX LA.
In addition to Villanueva and Luna, Lt. Oscar Martinez has also declared his candidacy for the 2026 sheriff’s race. Martinez aims to bring “operational excellence, transparency, and courage” to the department, advocating for deputies’ empowerment to perform their duties effectively.
