An Alabama man, Joshua Michael Richardson, 38, was arrested after allegedly making threats against St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado Canyon. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported that Richardson sent threatening emails to the monastery before visiting in person on August 26. A priest at the abbey reported the threats to the authorities, leading to an investigation.
Deputies found Richardson in a parking structure near the Santa Monica Pier, about 60 miles from the abbey. Upon searching his vehicle, they discovered body armor, high-capacity ammunition magazines, brass knuckles, and knives. Richardson was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Orange County Jail.
According to ABC7, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office charged Richardson with possession of a deadly weapon, carrying a dagger, possession of a large-capacity magazine, and making criminal threats.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange expressed gratitude for law enforcement’s swift action. Jarryd Gonzales, head of communications for the diocese, stated that the church remains vigilant in strengthening security efforts in light of increased threats against churches.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has increased patrols around the monastery, and the abbey has enhanced its private security measures. Authorities urge anyone with information about the case to contact the Sheriff’s Department.
