Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed by a U.S. drone strike in Afghanistan. al-Zawahiri took over as the leader of the terrorist organization after Osama bin Laden was killed by US. forces in a compound in Pakistan in 2011.
The operation was reportedly carried out by the CIA.
“Over the weekend, the United States conducted a counterterrorism operation against a significant Al Qaeda target in Afghanistan,” a senior administration official told Fox News. “The operation was successful, and there were no civilian casualties.”
President Joe Biden is scheduled to address the nation from the White House at 7:30 pm. ET to provide more information about the operation.
