In San Rafael, a series of unexpected and aggressive squirrel attacks have sent two residents to the emergency room. Joan Heblack and Isabel Campoy were both attacked while walking in the Lucas Valley area. Heblack recounted her experience, stating, “It clamped onto my leg. The tail was flying up here. I was like, ‘Get it off me, get off me!'” The attack left her with injuries severe enough to require emergency medical attention.
Campoy and her niece Carmen also encountered the aggressive squirrel. “Squirrel went from the floor, tried to jump up to my face. I tried to protect my face, my arm was completely overcome by the squirrel,” Campoy said. The attack left her arm covered in blood, necessitating a trip to the emergency room.
According to ABC7, flyers have been posted around the neighborhood, warning residents about the squirrel, which is described as having a goldish color. Vanessa Potter from WildCare in San Rafael explained that the squirrel’s aggressive behavior might stem from being fed by humans, leading it to associate people with food. “If they associate people with food, they’re not afraid of them,” Potter said.
The attacks have left the community on edge, with at least five reported incidents. Residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid feeding wild animals to prevent similar occurrences. As of now, there has been no sign of the squirrel in recent days, but the neighborhood remains vigilant.
