Actor Jerry Adler, best known for roles on The Sopranos and the film Manhattan Murder Mystery, has died at the age of 96, his family announced in a Dignity Memorial obituary shared on Saturday (August 23).
“Jerry Adler passed away on August 23, 2025, at the age of 96. Born on February 4, 1929, Jerry was a resident of New York, New York,” the obituary states in the care of Riverside Memorial Chapel.
Adler, a native of Brooklyn, was surrounded by loved ones in New York City at the time of his death, according to the New York Post. The actor began his career on Broadway and was the stage manager on the original production of My Fair Lady before appearing in several films, including Manhattan Murder Mystery alongside Woody Allen and Synechdoche, New York directed by Charlie Kaufman.
Adler famously played the role of Herman ‘Hesh Rabkin, a Jewish consigliere to Tony Soprano, on The Sopranos for 28 episodes spanning all six seasons of the popular HBO series. The actor, who also had roles on The Good Wife and Rescue Me late in his career, was known for being able to steal a scene in his roles.
“The intent was only to have him on one episode of THE GOOD WIFE,” showrunner Robert King wrote on his X account following news of Adler’s death.
“But he was so funny in a diner scene, yelling “I said ice cream, you stupid b*tch” we had him back for six years of Good Wife and three years of Good Fight. One of our favorite collaborators,” he added.
