Abused Puppy in Long Beach Recovering After Attack

A five-month-old puppy in Long Beach, California, is recovering after a shocking attack that was caught on video and has sparked widespread outrage. The incident, captured on surveillance video on Monday, shows a man violently lifting the puppy over his shoulder and slamming it to the ground. The man, identified as 28-year-old Alexander Cueva, was arrested by the Long Beach Police Department for intentional cruelty to an animal.

The puppy, a shepherd-Malinois mix, was taken into custody by the Long Beach Animal Care Center. Melanie Wagner, the bureau manager, stated, “She came into our custody last night. She was transported to our veterinary hospital to provide care and to just do an overall evaluation.” Wagner added that the puppy is now “bright, alert, and responsive” with a lot of energy.

The video of the attack quickly spread across social media, prompting a swift response from animal advocates and the community. Dina Michelle, founder of Wild Branch Rescue, expressed disbelief at the act, saying, “You just can’t imagine that somebody can do that to a defenseless animal.”

Long Beach Animal Care Services reported that the puppy sustained minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. Once she has fully recovered, she will be placed with a foster family while the investigation continues. They are also warning people to be on the lookout for scam donation accounts using this story to solicit donations and asks that anyone who wishes to donate to the puppy’s recovery or to Long Beach Animal Care services, does so via their website.
