Big Bear Eagles’ Egg Shows Signs of Hatching

In Big Bear, California, an egg belonging to the well-known bald eagles Jackie and Shadow is showing signs of hatching. According to the Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit organization that operates a live feed of the eagle nest, one of the three eggs has developed a tiny crack, known as a pip, which indicates the eaglet inside is preparing to emerge. This exciting development was announced on Sunday.

This moment is particularly significant as it marks almost three years since Jackie and Shadow’s last chick, Spirit, hatched. The Friends of Big Bear Valley shared their excitement on Facebook, saying, “Congratulations Jackie and Shadow and the entire eagle family! We’ve been waiting for almost 3 years.”

Experts note that after a pip appears, hatching can take between one and three days, although it is not always guaranteed. Fans of the eagles, who have been following the nest online, have faced disappointment in the past when eggs failed to hatch or were taken by predators. The Friends of Big Bear Valley expressed hope, stating, “We will remain patient and hold the most positive thoughts.”

In 2022, Jackie and Shadow successfully hatched an eaglet named Spirit, chosen through a contest held by the Friends of Big Bear Valley. As the community eagerly awaits the potential arrival of a new chick, they continue to watch the live feed for further developments.
