US Cities Brace For Surge In Disease-Spreading Pests This Spring

As spring approaches, several U.S. cities are preparing for an increase in disease-spreading pests due to unusual weather patterns. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has released its bi-annual Public Health Pest Index, warning of a surge in ticks, mosquitoes, cockroaches, and rodents in areas that experienced warm or wet winters.

These pests can spread diseases such as Lyme disease, West Nile virus, Salmonella, plague, and hantavirus.

“Ticks, mosquitoes, cockroaches, and rodents pose serious health risks,” said Dr. Jorge Parada, Medical Advisor for NPMA with a focus on infectious disease. “They can spread dangerous diseases like Lyme disease, West Nile virus, Salmonella, plague, and hantavirus, and even trigger asthma and allergies. Educating the public on these threats is critical, because without proper prevention, these pests can have serious consequences on our health.”

The report highlights several cities at risk. In Boston, brutal snowstorms have pushed rodents indoors, and a warmer spring may increase tick activity. Cleveland’s mild winter conditions could lead to a rise in cockroach and tick populations. In Denver, frigid weather is expected to drive mice indoors.

Florida faces a statewide warning due to its humid climate, which allows pests to thrive year-round. Despite a dry start to winter, rising temperatures and humidity are expected to create ideal breeding conditions.

New Orleans and San Antonio are also on alert. Historic snowfall in New Orleans has driven rats and cockroaches indoors, while San Antonio’s warm winter has kept mosquitoes, cockroaches, and ticks active. As temperatures rise, these cities could see a significant increase in pest-related health concerns.
