Trump announced the appointment on his Truth Social platform, describing Bongino as “a man of incredible love and passion for our Country.” Bongino will serve under Kash Patel, who was recently sworn in as FBI Director.
Bongino, who has never served in the FBI, brings a background in law enforcement and media. He previously worked for the New York Police Department and the Secret Service, working on the presidential details for Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush before becoming a prominent right-wing figure. He hosted a show on Fox News and currently runs a popular podcast, The Dan Bongino Show.
The appointment is unconventional, as the deputy director role traditionally goes to a career FBI agent. Bongino’s appointment comes at a time when the FBI is facing challenges, including internal turmoil and scrutiny over its handling of investigations related to the January 6 Capitol riot.
Bongino has been a vocal supporter of President Trump and has advanced pro-Trump narratives, including unsubstantiated claims about the 2020 election. His appointment is part of a broader reshaping of the FBI under Director Patel, who aims to emphasize traditional crime-fighting duties and relocate employees from Washington headquarters.
The move has sparked debate, with some questioning the lack of FBI experience in the bureau’s leadership. However, Trump expressed confidence in Bongino’s abilities, stating that his leadership, along with that of Director Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi, will restore “Fairness, Justice, Law and Order” in America.
