The White House said that President Donald Trump will impose new tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada starting on Saturday (February 1).
“I can confirm that tomorrow, the February 1 deadline President Trump put into place with a statement several weeks ago continues,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said during Friday’s briefing.
Leavitt said the tariffs will be 25% on Mexico and Canada and 10% on China, explaining that the measures are in response to the illegal sourcing and distribution of fentanyl from these countries.
According to Reuters, President Trump is still reviewing the plans and may allow some items to be exempted from the tariffs, though an official with knowledge of the plans said they expect those exemptions to be “few and far between.”
“The president is intent on ensuring that he effectively implements tariffs while cutting inflation and costs for the American people,” she said.
“These are promises made and promises kept by the president,” she added.
