A FedEx driver, Raven Edwards, 26, was arrested for driving under the influence after getting stuck on an abandoned bridge in Winston County, Alabama, on January 18. The Daily Mail reported that Edwards claimed she was following her GPS when it led her astray. The incident was captured in a chilling dashcam video that shows Edwards calmly driving along a dark road in a heavily wooded area.
As the ride started getting bumpy and the road narrowed, Edwards came to an abrupt stop due to debris in front of her. She soon realized she was stuck on a dilapidated wooden bridge in the middle of the woods, letting out an expletive.
After calling the police, deputies arrived and asked her to perform a field sobriety test, which she failed, leading to her arrest. According to Cullman Daily News, Edwards maintained her innocence, telling the outlet that she only failed her field sobriety test due to nerves.
Edwards was lucky that the bridge was covered in debris because if she had kept driving, she would have crashed over the bridge. Photos from the scene show the bridge lacked wooden panels covering the support beams underneath.
The Winston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Edwards was booked into county jail shortly after midnight and has since been released on bond.
In a Facebook post, Edwards’ cousin, Christina Shields, urged people to be empathetic, claiming Edwards was sober and had been misled by her GPS. Shields mentioned Edwards’ past struggles with substance abuse but asserted her sobriety at the time of the arrest.
“Please keep my cousin in your prayers instead of laughing, making jokes, or being ugly. You never know what awful things someone has endured or is currently enduring in their lives. You never know just how close someone is to giving it all up. Addiction is a disease and it does not discriminate. It doesn’t take much to be a decent human being,” Sheilds wrote.
