Seven youth hikers had to be taken to the hospital after a bolt of lightning struck the ground. The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office said that a youth group from the Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints in Salina, Utah, was hiking near the Willow Springs Overlook when storms rolled through the area just before 2 p.m.
“A light rainstorm in the area produced water puddling on the ground. While hiking, lightning struck the ground next to the youth. Approximately 50 youths felt the shock of the lightning,” Sevier County Sheriff Nathan Curtis said in a statement on Facebook.
Curtis said that seven of the youths needed medical attention and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Two of the youths experienced more severe symptoms related to electrocution and were airlifted to a children’s hospital in Lehi.
“The rest of the youth were all accounted for and brought back to Salina and have been returned their parents and there are no other medical issues being reported at this time,” Curtis said. “At this time none of injuries are expected to be life threatening.”
