Bloomingdale’s announced it will close its flagship store in San Francisco’s largest mall, the San Francisco Centre, in April. The 330,000-square-foot store, owned by Macy’s Inc., occupies five floors in the mall, which has experienced significant vacancies since the COVID-19 pandemic. Bloomingdale’s joins Nordstrom, which closed its flagship store at the mall in 2023 after 35 years.
The San Francisco Centre, managed by a receiver after previous owners Unibail Rodamco Westfield and Brookfield Properties exited in 2023, was set for public auction last year, but the sale has been delayed twice. Bloomingdale’s has a lease extending to 2046, and it remains unclear how the retailer will exit the agreement.
Macy’s is in the process of closing 150 stores by 2026, though its Union Square Plaza location is not on the closure list but is being marketed for sale.
“We don’t take this news lightly, but I am confident San Francisco’s best days are ahead,” San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie told KRON. “There are massive changes happening across the country in retail, and we know there’s a lot of work to do in our city. Although this closure is disappointing, I’m energized every day by businesses of all sizes opening and growing in our city. San Francisco has green shoots everywhere, and we continue to work towards the revitalization of the city.”
