A state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter is being held on Thursday (January 9) at Washington National Cathedral. The ceremony marks the final farewell to the 39th president before his body will be flown back to Georgia for burial.
The service will include tributes from President Joe Biden and remarks written by former President Gerald Ford and former Vice President Walter Mondale, delivered by their sons. Andrew Young, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, will deliver the homily. The ceremony features a mix of traditional hymns and contemporary music, with performances by the U.S. Marine Orchestra and the Armed Forces Chorus.
After the service, Carter’s casket will be transported to Joint Base Andrews, where it will be flown to Georgia. The motorcade will travel through downtown Plains, Georgia, allowing the public to pay their respects. The former president will be buried next to his wife, Rosalynn, in Plains.
