Trump Asks Supreme Court To Pause Sentencing In Hush Money Case

President-elect Donald Trump has requested the Supreme Court to halt his sentencing in a New York hush-money case scheduled for Friday (January 10). Trump’s legal team argues that the proceedings should be paused to allow him to appeal, citing presidential immunity as a key reason. The Supreme Court has asked New York prosecutors to respond by Thursday morning.

In May, Trump was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. The judge in the case, Juan Merchan, plans to give Trump an “unconditional discharge,” meaning no jail time, but the conviction would remain. Trump contends that the charges are politically motivated and that his presidential duties should exempt him from sentencing.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who handles emergency appeals from New York, is overseeing the case. Trump’s legal team, led by John Sauer, argues that the Supreme Court’s previous decision on presidential immunity supports their request for a stay. The Manhattan district attorney’s office has yet to comment on the matter.
