Tiger Woods’ Son Charlie Qualifies For First USGA Event

Charlie Woods, the 15-year-old son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, has qualified for his first USGA championship event, the Associated Press reports.

The younger Woods had the leading score among qualifiers for the U.S. Junior Amateur at Eagle Trace Golf Club on Wednesday (January 19), finishing at 1-under to be one of four players to qualify from the site.

“I didn’t play great my first two holes, but I played really good for the last 16. I just told myself not to make any more bogeys or doubles and I took advantage of some nice birdie looks when I had them,” Woods said via the AP.

Charlie’s father was 14 when he initially qualified for his first U.S. Junior event and reached the semifinals, winning his first event one year later at Bay Hill. Tiger Woods is the only player to win the U.S. Junior three consecutive times and is a nine-time USGA champion and three time U.S. Open champion.

“The USGA means a lot to me,” Charlie Woods said via the AP. “I want to win USGA championships and hopefully one day the U.S. Open.”

The U.S. Junior Amateur is scheduled to take place at Oakland Hills from July 22-28 and will include 264 players going through 36 holes of stroke play on the site’s North and South courses to determine which 64 players advance to match play.
