President-elect Donald Trump is expected to appoint Stephen Miller, a long-time adviser and immigration hard-liner, as his deputy chief of staff for policy in his upcoming administration.
Miller, known for his staunch stance on immigration, served as a senior adviser and director of speechwriting during Trump’s first term. He was instrumental in shaping many of Trump’s policy decisions, particularly on immigration, and was often the public face of those policies. Miller’s appointment to the role of deputy chief of staff for policy will allow him to have a more expansive role in the White House, working under chief of staff Susie Wiles to ensure smooth operations in the West Wing.
Since leaving the White House, Miller has served as the president of America First Legal, a conservative legal organization led by many former members of the Trump administration. The organization has challenged the Biden administration, media companies, universities, and others over issues such as freedom of speech and religion, as well as national security.
Miller has been a vocal advocate for more restrictive immigration policies. Before Trump’s loss to President Joe Biden in 2020, Miller previewed plans to ramp up an even more restrictive immigration agenda, including limiting asylum grants and work visas, punishing and outlawing “sanctuary cities,” and expanding the travel ban with tougher screening for visa applicants.
The appointment of Miller does not require Senate confirmation. His new role will likely see him instrumental in executing Trump’s promise to force mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
