For three years, NASA has been learning more about our closest neighboring planet, Mars, with the Perseverance rover. The incredible piece of technology has been roaming the Red Planet, taking photos, seeking signs of ancient life and collecting rock samples. Many of the photographs it takes look the same, but occasionally, something strange appears. Among the weirder images are ones showing metallic wreckage, strange carvings, a weird structure, an “alien boot,” a flying UFO, a mysterious doorway, an “alien” statue, “alien arms,” and what looks like an actual alien. Now comes one of the most curious items to be photographed by the rover – a human face seemingly carved into a rock.
The picture, which was taken on September 27 by Perseverance’s Mastcam-Z cameras, appears to show a very large, weathered head on its side. A forehead, nose, mouth and chin are all clearly visible… or are they? It is likely just pareidolia, the tendency for humans to find meaningful shapes and images in otherwise random arrangements of objects. There are some people though that are certain this isn’t pareidolia, rather some kind of ancient carving.
Either way, the picture was fascinating enough for the public to vote on it to be the space agency’s Image of the Week for Perseverance’s 189th week on Mars. Perhaps we’ll know more when man heads to the Red Planet, something NASA hopes to have happen in the next 15 years.
