Plane Makes Emergency Landing After Mouse Jumps Out Of In-Flight Meal

A Scandinavian Airlines flight traveling from Oslo, Norway, to Malaga, Spain, was forced to make an emergency landing after a mouse jumped out of an in-flight meal.

Jarle Borrestad told the BBC that he was sitting next to the woman when she opened her meal, and the furry critter jumped out. He said, surprisingly, the other passengers “were not stressed at all,” though he admitted to tucking his pants into his socks so the mouse wouldn’t climb up his leg.

In line with company procedures, the pilot made an emergency landing in Copenhagen, Denmark, because the mouse posed a safety risk. Airline spokesperson Oystein Schmidt told the AFP that the mouse could start chewing on wires and damaging the plane’s electrical systems.

“We made a very normal landing in Copenhagen in order to change aircraft and catering — which is a fully normal procedure when a rodent is found onboard,” a different spokesperson for the airline told PEOPLE. “In these cases, we have very clear procedures to follow, including full inspection of the aircraft and of all our suppliers’ processes to see what needs to be improved or changed in order to avoid scenarios like these. This inspection and investigation are now initiated.”

After the passengers deplaned, they boarded another aircraft and arrived at Malaga, only a few hours behind schedule.
