The arrest of Ryan Routh, the suspect in an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, was captured on bodycam footage released by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office in Florida on Monday. The 58-year-old suspect was apprehended on northbound Interstate 95 after deputies surrounded his vehicle. The footage shows deputies ordering Routh to walk backwards with his hands on his head before being taken into custody without incident.
Routh is accused of lying in wait for Trump at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, armed with an SKS-style rifle. He allegedly fled the golf course after Secret Service agents fired at him upon spotting the muzzle of his rifle through a chain-link fence. Trump was playing a round of golf one hole ahead, about 300 yards away from where Routh was positioned.
Routh was arrested shortly after a witness shared a photo of the suspect’s vehicle with authorities. Martin County Sheriff Will Snyder stated that Routh was caught near Palm City exit 714 on I-95.
Routh appeared for a federal court hearing in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Monday morning, where he was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. Additional federal charges are possible, and the initial charges announced Monday will keep Routh in custody.
