College Football Player Killed During Home Invasion

A college football player was fatally shot during what’s being investigated as a home invasion.

Jyilek Zyiare Harrington, 21, a linebacker at Division II West Virginia State, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds inside an apartment Wednesday (September 11) night, Charleston Police Lt. Tony Hazelett said in a statement obtained by the Associated Press. Several gunshots were reportedly fired during a disturbance in a hallway and inside the apartment, however, police said they don’t have information on a possible suspect.

West Virginia State issued a statement confirming counselors were available to students and faculty following Harrington’s death.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jyilek’s family as they mourn the loss of this incredible young man,” West Virginia State President Ericke S. Cage said in a letter to students and faculty.

Harrington was a senior on the West Virginia State football team and recorded eight tackles and one sack during the team’s win against Barton College last week.

“Jyilek truly embodied what it means to be a student-athlete and was a leader not only on campus but in the community,” West Virginia State Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Nate Burton said. “Jyilek was a young man that, during Christmas, would create a GoFundMe to help less fortunate families.”
