OJAI (KFI NEWS) Jackie, the beloved Big Bear bald eagle whose life with her longtime mate Shadow attracted viewers around the world, has died after weeks of intensive veterinary care. The Ojai Raptor Center said Jackie’s condition continued to deteriorate despite treatment and around-the-clock monitoring.
Jackie was taken to the center July 18 after she was found unable to fly following a confrontation with two juvenile bald eagles near Big Bear Lake. Veterinarians later discovered she was suffering from severe anemia. The center said every decision about her treatment was based on medical evidence and what was best for her welfare.
Jackie and Shadow became wildlife celebrities through a live camera overlooking their nest in the mountains above Big Bear Lake. Thousands of viewers followed the pair as they laid eggs, raised chicks and endured setbacks over the years. The raptor center said Jackie’s remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and additional information about her treatment and test results will be released later.
