LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Verizon service was restored after an outage today caused by vandals who cut fiber cables, disrupting mobile and home internet service for many Southland customers.
“Vandals cut multiple fiber cables, causing a service interruption for some mobile and home internet customers in Southern California earlier today,” a Verizon spokesperson said in a statement. Service was restored by 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
More than 12,000 outage reports involving Verizon were registered on the Downdetector site that afternoon. The figure represents user-submitted outage reports, and not necessarily the number of customers who lost service.
Verizon engineers worked to resolve the outage, and the company stated law enforcement had become involved.
“Acts of network theft and vandalism represent a direct threat to the safety and security of our communities,” the spokesperson said.
Verizon did not immediately provide the locations where the cables were cut, the number of customers affected or the law enforcement agency involved.
