The City of Orange’s Fourth of July crackdown on illegal fireworks resulted in $240,000 in fines, as announced by city officials.
The enforcement effort, which aimed to address community concerns about property damage, noise, and fire risks, utilized drones to monitor and identify violators. The drones, equipped with high-definition video, helped pinpoint 13 properties, leading to eight citations under the city’s new Social Host ordinance.
According to KTLA, the fines were structured based on the number of illegal fireworks discharged. The first offense resulted in a $2,000 fine, the second in $4,000, and each subsequent offense in $6,000. One property owner voluntarily surrendered 26 aerial mortars to avoid fines.
The city began its outreach on June 22, deploying electronic signboards and distributing 200 educational fliers in high-call areas. The Orange Police Department received 386 calls related to fireworks between June 20 and July 4, with 228 calls on Independence Day alone. The crackdown also led to the confiscation of 35 mortars, 12 Roman candles, and firecrackers, as reported by the Orange County Register.
The city’s efforts included a Fireworks Safe Disposal Campaign, distributing 1,800 buckets for proper disposal of used fireworks. The city’s permitted fireworks booths generated $597,000 in revenue, a 15% increase from 2025. Funds from fines will support public safety initiatives and the purchase of new drones and equipment.
