WEST HOLLYWOOD (CNS) – The city of West Hollywood announced Friday that it will open a cooling center at Plummer Park this weekend as a heat wave is expected to bring temperatures of 90 degrees or higher.
The cooling center will operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Plummer Park Community Center Senior Lounge, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd., according to the city.
City officials said the cooling center is activated when temperatures reach 90 degrees or above, and staff at Plummer Park will be available to direct visitors to the facility.
The city encouraged residents to take precautions during the hot weather by staying out of the sun when possible, avoiding strenuous activity, drinking plenty of water and wearing lightweight clothing.
Officials also reminded residents never to leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles, noting that interior temperatures can rise rapidly even when windows are partially open. They also warned that pavement and sidewalks can become hot enough to burn pets’ paws, recommending walks during the cooler morning or evening hours.
Free transportation to the cooling center will be available through the city’s Cityline shuttle service, which operates Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The ADA-accessible shuttles arrive about every 30 minutes, according to the city.
