Fire Burns 2,677 Acres in Llano; 0% Containment

LLANO (CNS) – A brush fire that erupted in the Antelope Valley community of Llano amid mid-90-degree temperatures has burned 2,677 acres, prompting evacuation orders and warnings, and was 0% contained Saturday.

The Summit Fire was reported about 12:50 p.m. Friday near Jesus Canyon Road and East Avenue Z, at the Los Angeles-San Bernardino county line, and initially burned through eight acres of brush.

An evacuation order was issued for the area of East Avenue Z and Fort Tejon Road, while evacuation warnings were established in other nearby areas.

Those under evacuation were being directed to the Antelope Valley Family YMCA at 4300110th Street West in Lancaster. Small pets were being sheltered at the Los Angeles County Animal Care Center-Palmdale, 38550 Sierra Highway.

At least 10 air tankers were dispatched to help dump water on the fire, with incident commanders requesting additional aerial support late Friday afternoon.

By 3:30 p.m., the fire had raced across 1,300 acres, with no containment lines established.

The fire was reported at approximately 2,271 acres by 5:55 p.m., but the Los Angeles County Fire Department later reported the size at 2,021 acres around 7 p.m. following an updated assessment.

No injuries were reported. Crews on the scene reported some outbuildings had been damaged or destroyed, and occupied structures were in the path of the flames.

The fire burned into the Angeles National Forest and was advancing toward San Bernardino County.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a smoke advisory, which will be in effect until at least 5 p.m. Saturday.

There had not been widespread smoke impacts at the surface in the South Coast Air Basin through 6:30 p.m. Friday, with monitors and sensors recording good to moderate particle pollution levels, according to the district.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued a smoke advisory for portions of the county due to smoke from the Summit Fire. It will also be in effect until at least 5 p.m. Saturday.
