NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CNS) – HBO Max’s “Hacks,” is considered a lock to be among the eight nominees for outstanding comedy series when nominations for the 78th annual Primetime Emmy Awards are announced Wednesday.
“Hacks” has been nominated in the category in each of its first four seasons, winning in 2024. It completed its run May 28.
Last year’s winner, The Apple TV+ Hollywood satire “The Studio” did not air any new episodes during eligibility period, June 1, 2025-May 31, 2026.
Five of last year’s other nominees are also eligible this year — ABC’s “Abbott Elementary”; FX’s “The Bear”; Netflix’s “Nobody Wants This”; Hulu’s “Only Murders In The Building”; and Apple TV’s “Shrinking” are also eligible.
First-year series that are contenders for nominations include the Apple TV+ comedy horror series “Widow’s Bay” and the Apple TV+ comedy-drama “Margo’s Got Money Troubles.”
Another contender is “The Comeback,” which returned to HBO March 22 after a more than 11-year absence.
Last year’s winner for best drama series, the HBO Max medical drama, “`The Pitt,” is eligible for a nomination, as are three other of last year’s nominees Netflix’s “The Diplomat”; Hulu’s “Paradise”; and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses.”
Netlfix’s “Stranger Things” is expected to receive a nomination for its fifth and final season after being nominated in each of its first four.
HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” is favored to receive a nomination for its first season.
No series from a major broadcast network has been nominated in the category since the NBC family drama “This Is Us” in 2019. A series from the major broadcast networks has not won since Fox’s “24” in 2006.
All five of last year’s nominees for outstanding reality competition program are eligible to be nominated again Tuesday. Peacock’s murder mystery game “The Traitors” has won each of the past two years.
Last year’s field also consisted of CBS’ “The Amazing Race,” MTV’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Bravo’s “Top Chef,” and CBS’ “Survivor.”
“The Amazing Race” is expected to be nominated for the 23nd time in the 24 years the category has existed. It was nominated in each of the first 17 years, was not eligible in 2020 because CBS did not air a new season during the eligibility period, then nominated again each of the last four years. It is a 10-time winner, including each of the first seven.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” is expected to be nominated for the 10th consecutive year.
“Top Chef” has been nominated 19 consecutive years.
“Survivor” is an eight-time nominee.
The NBC singing competition “The Voice” had its 13-year streak of nominations snapped last year.
Emmy-winning actors Liza Colón-Zayas and Jeff Hiller will announce the nominations in the top categories at 8:30 a.m. at the Wolf Theatre in the academy’s Saban Media Center at its North Hollywood headquarters. The announcement will be streamed live on Emmys.com/nominations.
Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego will host the ceremony.
The 78th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be held Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. The bulk of the awards will be presented at the Creative Arts Emmys Sept.5-6, also at the Peacock Theater. Those awards are mainly in technical categories such as picture editing, costuming, hairstyling, makeup and sound, but also include awards for guest acting.
