Victor Willis Of Village People Dies At 74

Victor Willis, the original lead singer and co-founder of the iconic disco group Village People, passed away on Tuesday (June 30) at the age of 74. Known for his powerful vocals on hits like “Y.M.C.A.,” “Macho Man,” and “In the Navy,” Willis died after a short, aggressive illness, according to his wife, Karen Huff-Willis. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.

Willis was born on July 1, 1951, in San Francisco, California. He grew up singing gospel in his father’s Baptist church. After studying acting and dance, he joined the Negro Ensemble Company and performed in the original Broadway production of ‘The Wiz.’ His career took a pivotal turn when he met French producer Jacques Morali, who envisioned Willis as the lead vocalist for a new musical project. This collaboration led to the formation of the Village People in 1977.

The Village People quickly rose to fame with their unique blend of catchy disco tunes and flamboyant costumes, representing exaggerated versions of American masculinity. Willis often performed as the policeman, becoming a defining voice of the disco era. Despite their success, he left the group in 1980 but continued to influence the music industry.

In 2012, Willis won a landmark legal case under the United States Copyright Act, reclaiming rights to several of the group’s songs. He returned to the Village People in 2017, resuming his role as lead singer and revitalizing the group’s presence in the music world.

Willis’s contributions to music were recognized when “Y.M.C.A.” was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2020, acknowledging its cultural and historical significance.

The Village People remain a beloved part of pop culture, with their music featured in films, commercials, and public events worldwide. Willis’s legacy as a pioneering artist and performer endures, leaving behind a rich catalogue of music that continues to resonate across generations.
