World Cup Watch Parties Set For Recreation Centers, Grand Central Market

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Free watch parties for all three of Monday’s round of 32 World Cup matches will be held at three recreation centers in Los Angeles and the Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles.

Monday’s play will begin at 10 a.m. when Brazil faces Japan in Houston.

Brazil won Group C thanks to a better goal differential than Morocco. Both teams were 2-0-1, but the Brazilians had a plus-6 goal differential to the Moroccans’ plus-3.

Japan was second in Group F with a 1-0-2 record.

Brazil is fifth in the unofficial rankings released after Sunday’s Canada-South Africa round of 32 match by FIFA, soccer’s global governing body. Japan is 17th.

The rankings are based on a point system in which points are added to or subtracted from a team’s total based on the latest result. The ranking is considered unofficial until all matches are approved as international `A’ matches. The latest official ranking was released June 11, the day the World Cup began.

The Opta supercomputer gives Brazil a 68.86% chance of advancing to the round of 16 based on 10,000 pre-match simulations, Japan a 31.14% chance.

The winner will play the winner of Tuesday’s Ivory Coast-Norway round of 32 match in a round of 16 match Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Germany-Paraguay match will follow at 1:30 p.m. from Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Germany won Group E thanks to a better goal differential than Ivory Coast. Both teams were 2-1-0, but the Germans had a plus-6 goal differential to the Ivory Coasters’ plus-2.

Paraguay was third in Group D with a 1-1-1 record.

Germany is 12th in the unofficial rankings, Paraguay 37th.

The Opta supercomputer gives Germany a 79.96% chance of advancing, Paraguay a 20.04% chance.

The winner will play the winner of Tuesday’s France-Sweden match Saturday in Philadelphia.

Morocco will face the Netherlands at 6 p.m. in Monterrey, Mexico in Monday’s final match.

The Netherlands won Group F with a 2-0-1 record.

The Opta supercomputer gives Netherlands a 58.9% chance of advancing, Morocco a 41.1% chance.

The winner will play Saturday in Houston against Canada, a 2-1 winner over South Africa Sunday.

All three of Monday’s matches will be televised in English by Fox and in Spanish by Telemundo.

Free watch parties will be held at the El Sereno, Green Meadows and Westwood recreation centers as part of the Kick It In the Park program organized by various city of Los Angeles departments that also include youth soccer clinics, neighborhood programming and community resources.

Attendance is limited to 1,000 people at a time. Alcohol sale, possession and consumption is not permitted. Attendees are advised by organizers to bring blankets, chairs, snacks and reusable water bottles.

More information is available at kickit.lacity.gov.

The Germany-Paraguay match will be shown at the Los Angeles Central Library’s Taper Auditorium as part of the program.
