The National Park Service (NPS) has reported that the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., was damaged with a sharp knife or razor. This information emerged in a recent court filing connected to a lawsuit over renovations initiated by President Donald Trump. The filing also revealed that approximately 70 fence post tops were thrown into the pool. According to WDBJ7, the pool will be drained after the Fourth of July to conduct repairs.
The Reflecting Pool has been a focal point of President Trump’s beautification efforts in the nation’s capital. However, the project has faced issues, including algae growth and peeling paint following a $16 million renovation. Crews were observed using hydrogen peroxide to combat the algae. ABC News reported that President Trump claimed the pool’s painted surface was sabotaged with chemicals, and he announced the arrest of several individuals on vandalism charges.
The renovation project, which aimed to turn the pool “American flag blue,” has faced criticism for its contracting process. The Guardian noted that the Trump administration awarded a no-bid contract to a business linked to a longtime supporter of the president. The project is under scrutiny, with calls for expert consultation to ensure the best outcome for the historic site.
