Federal Judge Dismisses Trump Lawsuit Against L.A. Sanctuary Law

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration challenging Los Angeles’ sanctuary city ordinance.

U.S. District Judge Fernando M. Olguin ruled over the weekend that the lawsuit failed to demonstrate how the ordinance violates federal law. The ordinance, enacted in 2024, prohibits the use of city resources for federal immigration enforcement, aiming to protect the city’s immigrant population.

The lawsuit, filed last June, argued that the ordinance obstructs federal immigration efforts and contributes to chaos in the city. However, Judge Olguin concluded that the ordinance does not directly regulate the federal government but rather controls the actions of the city’s own agents and agencies. He granted the administration the option to file an amended complaint by July 3.

L.A. City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto celebrated the dismissal as a victory for local control, stating, “This order reinforces the well-established principle that local governments have the authority to decide how to use their personnel and resources.” L.A. Mayor Karen Bass also praised the ruling, affirming the city’s commitment to protecting immigrants and all Angelenos.

The ordinance, which was finalized after President Trump’s election in 2024, prevents city employees from using city property to assist in immigration enforcement, except in cases involving serious offenses. It also restricts city personnel from inquiring about an individual’s citizenship or immigration status unless necessary for providing city services.

While the Justice Department may refile its complaint, the ruling marks a significant setback for the Trump administration’s efforts to challenge sanctuary city policies. The ordinance remains in effect, allowing Los Angeles to continue its stance on immigration enforcement.
