A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by police in Santa Ana following a family dispute late Sunday night.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. at an apartment complex on the 3400 block of Main Street. According to the Santa Ana Police Department, a 53-year-old man called 911, reporting that his girlfriend’s teenage son had stabbed him with a knife and was damaging property while under the influence.
Upon arrival, officers found the teen still armed with the knife. Officer Natalie Garcia stated, “When our officers arrived, they saw that the suspect was still armed with that knife and unfortunately the suspect did not put that knife down, and that’s when the officer-involved shooting occurred.”
The shooting is part of a broader conversation about police use of force in Santa Ana. Earlier this year, the family of an 18-year-old man shot by Santa Ana police filed a federal civil rights lawsuit, claiming excessive force and wrongful death. The lawsuit alleges that the man, Victor Lopez, was shot while complying with police commands. The Santa Ana Police Department maintains that Lopez did not comply and reached for a firearm.
The recent incident involving the 16-year-old boy is expected to add to the ongoing scrutiny of the department’s practices. The Santa Ana Police Department has not yet released further details about the shooting, and the investigation is ongoing.
