High Surf and Rip Current Danger For Orange County This Week

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Beach Hazard Statement for Orange County, warning of high surf and dangerous beach conditions throughout the week.

The advisory, which began on Sunday, will remain in effect until Friday, impacting both Orange and San Diego County beaches.

According to the NWS, surf heights are expected to reach 3 to 6 feet, with occasional sets up to 7 feet along south-facing beaches. The elevated surf, combined with king tides, increases the risk of rip currents, which can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. As a precaution, lifeguards and first responders have been working overtime to ensure beachgoers’ safety.

The NWS advises residents and visitors to stay off rocks and jetties and to follow lifeguard instructions. The agency also warns of potential minor coastal flooding in low-lying areas due to the high astronomical tides, which are expected to reach 7.5 to 7.9 feet each evening.

KTLA reports that seasonal June conditions will continue through the week, with near-normal temperatures and morning fog along the coast. The surf is expected to gradually subside by Friday, reducing the rip current risk to moderate levels.

In Newport Beach, city officials have advised residents to take precautions against potential flooding. According to a dispatch from the Newport Beach city manager’s office, areas like Newport Island and Balboa Island are particularly susceptible to flooding. Residents are encouraged to install seawall plugs and use sandbags to protect their properties.
