Pakistani PM Hints at U.S.-Iran Peace Deal

Reports indicate that the United States and Iran are nearing a peace agreement, potentially set to be signed this weekend. Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, announced on X that Pakistan is “working closely” with both nations to finalize the agreement’s next steps. Pakistan has been at the forefront of mediating between the U.S. and Iran.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Tehran has reached an understanding on “most issues” and is in the final stages of negotiations. The agreement, referred to as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to cease hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and facilitate further discussions. According to Al Jazeera, the MoU includes lifting the U.S. naval blockade against Iran.

Despite the progress, some hurdles remain. The Soufan Center reports that the MoU does not specify Iranian compliance with U.S. demands on its nuclear program. However, U.S. officials claim Iran has verbally agreed to suspend uranium enrichment. The MoU sets a 60-day period for negotiations to resolve outstanding issues.

The MoU is expected to ease tensions in the region, with regional leaders, including those from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, expressing support. Reuters notes that the deal could lead to significant economic relief for Iran, including the potential unblocking of $25 billion in assets.

The agreement’s success hinges on cooperation from both sides, with Pakistan playing a crucial role in mediating the discussions. The international community remains watchful as the U.S. and Iran approach a potential turning point in their relations.
