The 79th Annual Tony Awards took place on Sunday (June 7) at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, celebrating the finest in American live theater. Hosted by pop star Pink, the event saw ‘Death of a Salesman’ emerge as the most awarded production, winning six Tonys, including Best Revival of a Play.
The award for Best Play went to Liberation by Bess Wohl, a drama about a 1970s women’s group that also won the Pulitzer Prize. Wohl’s win marks her as only the fourth woman to receive this accolade. Meanwhile, ‘Schmigadoon!’, based on the Apple TV series, won Best Musical. The show, which parodies classic Broadway musicals, also took home awards for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.
The ceremony featured performances from all nominated musicals and musical revivals, including a standout opening number by Pink, who performed ‘Lady Marmalade’ alongside Neil Patrick Harris and other Broadway stars. Pink’s hosting debut was marked by her energetic performances, including ‘All That Jazz’ from ‘Chicago’.
In acting categories, John Lithgow won Best Actor in a Play for ‘Giant’, becoming the oldest man to win a competitive acting Tony. Lesley Manville won Best Actress in a Play for ‘Oedipus’. For musicals, Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy won Best Actor and Actress for their roles in ‘Ragtime’, which also won Best Revival of a Musical.
The night also celebrated the achievements of Qween Jean, who became the first openly transgender Tony winner for her costume design in ‘CATS: The Jellicle Ball’.
The Tony Awards, presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League, continue to honor excellence in theater, with this year’s ceremony showcasing a diverse array of talent and productions.
