Kyoto police say it is “highly probable” that James “Weston” Higginbotham, a 20-year-old Auburn University student, left his family intentionally while visiting Japan, but authorities remain concerned for his safety. The search continues after Higginbotham was last seen on Wednesday (May 29) in the Yamashina area of Kyoto during a family trip, according to Kyoto Prefectural Police.
Police and family say Higginbotham, an experienced hiker and environmental engineering student, vanished after a disagreement with his mother over using ChatGPT to navigate their travels. He decided to explore Kyoto alone, telling his family he needed space. Surveillance footage later showed him walking by himself in the Yamashina area, which borders forested mountains. His phone location was turned off, something his family says is “out of character,” and he was reported missing after not responding to messages.
Authorities have deployed officers, search dogs, and helicopters to comb the area, but search efforts have been hampered by heavy rains from a typhoon. Volunteers, including local Japanese citizens, have joined the search, handing out flyers and helping with translation. The FBI has also offered support, stating it is “ready to assist our international partners with any requests for assistance.”
There is currently no evidence of foul play, and police are treating the case as a missing persons investigation. Higginbotham does not speak Japanese, which authorities say adds to their concern for his well-being. He had about 10,000 yen (roughly $62) and a partially charged phone at the time of his disappearance.
Family, friends, and the Auburn University community are urging anyone with information to contact local authorities and avoid posting potential sightings publicly. Loved ones back in Alabama have held vigils and prayer meetings, while the family works to spread awareness within Japan, believing that reaching more local residents is key to finding Higginbotham.
Police say they will respect Higginbotham’s wishes and privacy if he is located. The search continues.
