ISS Astronauts Shelter Amid Air Leak Repairs

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are taking precautions as repairs are underway for an air leak in the Russian segment. NASA reports that five of the seven crew members are currently sheltering inside the docked SpaceX Crew Dragon “Freedom” spacecraft while two cosmonauts work on fixing the cracks causing the leak. The issue has persisted for about six years, with a recent pressure drop noticed after a Russian cargo ship’s arrival last month.

The leaks are located in the PrK tunnel of the Zvezda Service Module, which has been problematic since 2019. Despite recent efforts to seal the leaks, the root cause remains unidentified. According to SpaceNews, NASA and Roscosmos are still investigating potential causes, such as high cycle fatigue or environmental-assisted cracking.

The situation has led to delays in other operations, including the launch of Axiom-4, initially scheduled for Thursday, June 19. NASA postponed the launch to further assess the repairs’ success, as noted by SpacePolicyOnline.com. The ISS, operational since 2000, faces challenges as it ages, including budget constraints and international cooperation issues.

NASA aims to keep the ISS running until 2030, despite Russia’s current commitment only extending to 2028. Future plans include deorbiting the ISS with a U.S. Deorbit Vehicle, but funding and development timelines remain concerns. The ongoing repairs and investigations are crucial for ensuring the station’s safety and longevity.
