OSU Settles With Student Athlete Sex Abuse Victims For $100M

Ohio State University (OSU) has agreed to a $100 million settlement with approximately 280 former students who claimed they were sexually abused by Dr. Richard Strauss, a former team doctor. This settlement, announced on Wednesday (June 3), concludes an eight-year legal battle over allegations that Strauss abused hundreds of student athletes during physical exams between 1978 and 1998.

Ravi Bellamkonda, OSU President, expressed gratitude to the survivors for their courage in coming forward. The university had previously settled with over 300 students for about $60 million. The recent settlement is part of OSU’s ongoing efforts to address the misconduct and support survivors.

In 2018, OSU launched an investigation into the allegations after receiving a report from a former student-athlete. The investigation, conducted by Perkins Coie LLP, found that Strauss had abused at least 177 male students. The university has since implemented numerous changes to prevent such incidents in the future and has offered counseling services to those affected.

The settlement follows numerous lawsuits filed against OSU, with survivors alleging that the university failed to adequately investigate complaints and inform students of the abuse. The Sixth Circuit Court recently reinstated Title IX claims against OSU, which could have contributed to the settlement decision.

OSU remains committed to supporting survivors and ensuring the safety of its students and staff. The university has expressed profound regret and sincere apologies to those impacted by Strauss’ actions.
