Senate Moves Forward with Immigration Funding Bill

The Senate has taken a significant step forward by advancing an immigration enforcement funding bill after weeks of delay. On Wednesday (June 3), lawmakers voted 53 to 46 to begin considering a package aimed at funding immigration enforcement agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Border Patrol, with a budget of $72 billion through 2029. This decision follows a period of contention over a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” proposed by the White House, which led to a stall in progress.

The bill’s advancement will now lead to hours of debate and a series of unlimited back-to-back amendment votes before a final decision is reached later this week. The measure faced resistance from Republicans who expressed concerns about the fund, which is intended to compensate individuals claiming political prosecution. Some Republicans fear it could benefit those involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

According to PBS, the fund is part of a settlement resolving a lawsuit by President Donald Trump against the IRS over leaked tax returns. The controversy surrounding this fund has become a major hurdle for the bill, with Democrats proposing amendments to block or restrict its use.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune acknowledged the political complexities involved, stating that the White House should have consulted Congress before announcing the settlement. Meanwhile, Senator Mitch McConnell criticized the fund, calling it “morally wrong.”

Despite the challenges, Republicans are determined to pass the bill using a budget reconciliation process, which allows for passage with a simple majority. This strategy aims to secure funding for immigration enforcement without Democratic support. Reuters reports that this approach has faced criticism from Democrats who demand changes to the agencies’ operations.

As the debate continues, the Senate’s focus remains on securing funding for ICE and the Border Patrol. The outcome of this legislative effort will have significant implications for immigration enforcement in the coming years.
