Scott Pelley Fired From “60 Minutes”

Veteran journalist Scott Pelley has been dismissed from his role at CBS News’ “60 Minutes” following a heated confrontation with the show’s new executive producer, Nick Bilton. The incident occurred during Bilton’s first staff meeting, where Pelley criticized the network’s recent changes, including the firing of key staff members.

Pelley reportedly accused CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss of “murdering” the iconic news program, as reported by The Guardian. He expressed dissatisfaction with the network’s decision to dismiss the show’s executive producer, executive editor, and two correspondents, Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega.

During the meeting, Pelley received a standing ovation from colleagues, indicating strong support for his stance. However, Bilton informed Pelley that he would not be intimidated by his remarks, as noted by The Los Angeles Times.

In a letter to Pelley, Bilton expressed disappointment over Pelley’s decision to criticize him publicly and stated that Pelley showed no interest in finding a path forward together. This decision comes amid ongoing changes at CBS News, led by Weiss, who has been tasked with moving the network towards a more politically centered approach.

Pelley’s departure raises questions about the future direction of “60 Minutes,” a program long revered for its investigative journalism. Weiss’s leadership has faced criticism for allegedly prioritizing corporate interests over editorial independence, as highlighted by The Bulwark.
