President Donald Trump is currently in the situation room, deliberating on a memorandum to extend the ceasefire with Iran for 60 days. In a post on Truth Social, President Trump emphasized that Iran must agree never to possess a nuclear weapon and that the Strait of Hormuz must be opened immediately without tolls. He also mentioned that any water mines would be destroyed by the U.S. military, and the U.S. blockade of the strait would end.
As reported by BBC, the agreement with Iran has been “largely negotiated,” with final details pending. President Trump had a “very good call” with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar regarding a “Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE.” However, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei warned that while positions have been converging, key issues remain unresolved.
The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route, has been a focal point in these negotiations. According to Reuters, about 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas flows through this waterway. The U.S. has blockaded Iranian ports since April 13, significantly impacting oil prices.
Iran has proposed a 14-point plan, as noted by Al Jazeera, seeking an end to the war and addressing issues within 30 days. However, President Trump remains firm on Iran’s nuclear capabilities as a “red line.” The U.S. is considering forming a naval coalition to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The situation remains tense, with both sides expressing frustration but unwilling to abandon negotiations. President Trump has warned of potential military action if Iran “misbehaves,” while Iran insists on lifting sanctions and securing guarantees against future aggression.
