Lawsuit Filed Against GKN Aerospace Over Chemical Leak

A Garden Grove couple has filed a federal lawsuit against GKN Aerospace, alleging negligence in the handling of a toxic chemical that led to a large-scale evacuation.

The lawsuit, filed on Saturday, claims the aerospace company was negligent in the storage and release of methyl methacrylate, a hazardous chemical, from its facility in Garden Grove. The plaintiffs, represented by The X-Law Group and Presidio Law Firm, accuse GKN Aerospace of negligence, trespass, and strict liability for ultrahazardous activity.

The incident began on Thursday when a storage tank containing 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate overheated, forcing the evacuation of approximately 50,000 residents across Garden Grove and nearby areas. The Orange County Fire Authority reported the tank’s internal temperature was rising, posing a risk of a leak or explosion. As of Monday, the temperature had stabilized, but evacuation orders remain in place.

The lawsuit seeks damages for property damage, evacuation-related expenses, and the emotional distress caused by the threat of toxic exposure. GKN Aerospace, in a statement, expressed regret for the disruption and stated they are working with authorities to resolve the situation safely.

The incident has drawn attention to GKN Aerospace’s safety record, with previous OSHA violations noted at the facility. The legal proceedings may involve examining these past violations to determine liability.
