House Republicans Cancel Vote To Curb President Trump’s Power Over Iran War

House Republicans postponed a vote on Thursday (May 21) regarding a war powers resolution aimed at restricting President Donald Trump‘s military actions in Iran. The decision came after it became apparent that the resolution would likely pass. Lawmakers are now expected to vote on the resolution in June, following their return from the Memorial Day recess.

The resolution seeks to limit President Trump’s ability to continue U.S. military operations in Iran, which began on February 28 without congressional approval. Congressional support for the conflict has waned, even among Republicans, due to its impact on global energy supplies and rising U.S. gas prices. The Democratic-backed resolution has previously been voted down by the Republican-majority House, but several lawmakers indicated support ahead of the scheduled vote.

The delay in the House vote signals diminishing congressional support for the war.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other Democratic leaders criticized the Republicans for delaying the vote, calling them “cowardly” for avoiding accountability. They emphasized the need to support U.S. service members affected by the conflict. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise stated that some members were absent and would be given the opportunity to vote when they return.

Under the War Powers Resolution of 1973, a president can engage in military conflict for only 60 days without congressional approval. President Trump has argued that the law does not apply due to a ceasefire with Iran. The House resolution, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks, directs the president to remove U.S. forces from hostilities against Iran, except for defense against imminent attacks.

The resolution’s postponement follows a tie vote in the House last week, with three Republicans supporting it. Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, the only Democrat who opposed the resolution last week, has pledged to support it in the future.

The Senate has already passed a resolution aimed at ending the war with Iran.

The House is expected to address the resolution when it reconvenes on June 2.
