The Sandy Fire in Simi Valley, California, has reached 22% containment as of Wednesday, while approximately 43,700 residents remain under mandatory evacuation orders.
The fire, which erupted late Monday morning near Sycamore Park, has expanded to 2,115 acres due to strong winds, high temperatures, and low humidity, destroying at least one home.
Fire crews, supported by water-dropping helicopters, made significant progress overnight. According to Ventura County Fire Department spokesperson Andrew Dowd, containment lines are being reinforced as cooler temperatures and increased humidity provide more favorable conditions for firefighting efforts. However, winds are expected to pick up again, potentially increasing fire activity.
The fire began around 10:45 a.m. on Monday and quickly spread, prompting evacuation orders for tens of thousands of residents. Los Angeles Times reports that the fire’s rapid spread was aided by dry grasses and steep terrain. The Los Angeles Fire Department has deployed resources to assist in the firefight.
Efforts to contain the blaze continue with nearly 869 firefighters on the ground. KTLA reported that the Ventura County Fire Department has prioritized structure protection, preventing further damage to homes.
Residents are urged to stay informed through emergency alerts and updates from the Ventura County website.
